The members, management and staff of the BAS were saddened to hear of the passing of renowned vet Dr. John Duckhouse, on Thursday, January 12. From all reports, at the time Dr. Duckhouse was doing what he loved best – looking after animals.
His colleagues, clients and friends described him as a warm, compassionate and competent doctor whose priority was always the welfare of the animals in his care. He was passionate about music too and at one time played the trumpet and sang in a jazz band. He was also a pilot and a sailor.
Though Dr. Duckhouse lived in Barbados for several decades, he originally came from the Bahamas, having left there in the 1970’s to take up residence here.
He quickly became sought out for his veterinary training and it is estimated that he worked closely with about 90% of the local, small farmers. He was always willing to share his knowledge and expertise and was highly respected, never waivering from his high ethical standards.
CEO of the BAS James Paul said that Dr. Duckhouse made a significant contribution to agriculture in Barbados by ensuring the stability of the livestock industry, by helping farmers to operate under good health practices. He also made sure that the importation of animals was done under strict protocols.
In his tribute to Dr. Duckhouse, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Indar Weir said, “The veterinary, agricultural and animal owning community have lost a great friend, colleague, mentor and professional. He will be sorely missed.”
The BAS expressed deepest condolences to the family of the late Dr. Duckhouse.
